Bluesky Social has become an increasingly popular social media platform, especially among users abandoning X (formerly known as Twitter). Whether you’ve never heard of it or already created an account, here’s what you need to know.

What is Bluesky Social?

Bluesky Social originally began as an invitation-only space until it opened to the public in February. Before going public, the site took time to perfect its moderation tools and various features. The outcome is a platform that resembles X in many ways, allowing users to look at the feeds of fellow users, send DMs, and pin posts. Users can also access “starter feeds” with curated people and accounts to follow.

A Growing Platform

Recent events, including the banning of X in Brazil and the outcome of the US election, have resulted in a surge among users looking for a social platform they feel offers like-minded people a chance to connect. Several celebrities and left-leaning democrats, particularly, have ditched X for Bluesky.

Despite X experiencing some departure, it still reigns supreme. Bluesky might be growing, but it has a long way to go before it’s on an equal playing field with the social media giants.

The (Blue) Skies the Limit

While Bluesky may not yet rival X, it has larger ambitions, like aspiring to make social networks work across various platforms (known as interoperability). This is something that users can’t do at present; people must stay on Twitter or Facebook to interact with other Twitter and Facebook users.

Interoperability can offer benefits, including increased user reach, more market competition, a better user experience, and more open and transparent online environments.
