Common Mistakes of eCommerce Websites

common ecommerce marketing mistakes

In our increasingly competitive world, it can be challenging for ecommerce businesses to stand out amid the crowd. Whether you’re an established business owner hoping to optimize performance or are just getting started and want to avoid common pitfalls, you can never go wrong by focusing on your website. Your site is the lifeblood of your digital presence, and unfortunately, it’s all too common to fall victim to certain mistakes. Here, we share a selection of the web design missteps we see most often:

Cookie Cutter Product Descriptions

If you’re selling products from other manufacturers on your ecommerce site, avoid duplicate product descriptions. Although Google doesn’t count using the manufacturer’s description as duplicate content, recycling descriptions is a missed opportunity to sell the product to your target audience. Whenever possible, put your own spin on product descriptions that resonate with your audience and will drive search engine traffic.

An Underperforming eCommerce Marketing Website

In an ideal world, your site would load with lightning fast speed and be compatible with all devices. These features are incredibly important for all sites, but are especially crucial for businesses that operate entirely online. Customers are short on time, and studies have shown that today’s consumers only spend a few seconds on a page before moving on. If your site isn’t responsive, it’s all but certain that you’re losing customers.

Skipping An “About” Page

Given the fact that most customers don’t stick around on a page long, it makes sense for ecommerce business owners to think that creating an “about” page isn’t worth the time. However, many visitors to your site are seeking connection and appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your company. Never be shy about sharing the history of your business, since you never know who it will resonate with!

Failing to Offer Social Proof

Think about yourself as a consumer: you probably spend a few moments to give a brand a quick Google before committing to the purchase. Most of your own existing and potential customers are the same way. Social proof is more important than ever before, and luckily, it’s simple to provide testimonials on your site and elsewhere (third-party platforms can be great for integrating reviews with your site).

If you’re running an ecommerce business, your website is essential to the success of your brand. The mistakes mentioned here are common, but avoidable (and fixable!).  If your current site isn’t achieving the results you’d like or you’re interested in designing an effective site from the ground up, we can help.
